OTR tires are a serious investment, and most of their value can be lost in the warehouse rather than on the machine if they are stored badly. The good news: proper storage is mostly about discipline, not money. Here are seven practical tips we share with our distributors.
Ozone, sunlight and heat accelerate rubber aging. Store tires indoors, away from windows, electric motors and welding equipment, at moderate temperature and humidity.
Tires stored upright on clean pallets keep their shape best. If tires must be stacked, keep stacks low and rotate the position of the tires every few months.
Direct contact with soil, concrete or oil-stained floors transfers moisture and chemicals into the rubber. Wooden pallets or racks are the right support.
Oils, fuels and solvents soften rubber. Store tires far away from these materials, and never clean them with aggressive solvents.
Follow first-in, first-out. Tires should not be stored for many years even in perfect conditions, so plan orders according to real consumption.
For tube type tires, store inner tubes in their original packaging, lightly inflated or in boxes, away from sharp objects.
Before mounting, check for cracks, deformation and bead damage. A five-minute inspection prevents hours of downtime in the field.
